Episcopal Relief and Development launches campaign to help children and mothers

We are so happy to have a chance to remind you of the 1,000 Days of Love venture being sponsored by Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) and endorsed by our diocese.

Remember some years ago when we wholeheartedly supported ERD’s Nets for Life Campaign?  As a diocese, we raised so much money to provide mosquito nets in the prevention of Malaria in Africa, and it worked, and we helped to save lives.  Now we have another chance to have, perhaps, an even greater impact – this time on the lives of so many children.

Through the One Thousand Days of Love Campaign, we have the opportunity to provide nurturing and nourishment to nearly 13,200 children and their communities in meaningful, sustainable, and culturally respectful ways.

Each church has been given a goal which, when calculated, amounts to just $15.00 per member.

So, what does Episcopal Relief and Development plan to do with your donated money?  But more importantly, how can your commitment and support become an instrument of God’s Love and our love for each other?  You can actually have fun meeting, and even exceeding your personal goal, and that of our church, all while you are helping to give a child a chance at life.

So, what does your Gift of Love mean to a child?  Researchers indicate that the most important years in a child’s development are from birth to age five.  With your contribution of just $15 or more, per member, to the 1,000 Days of Love Campaign, you will be providing much needed basic information, medicine and nutrition for expectant mothers and newborns, who are most vulnerable to infectious diseases. You will be providing hearing aids, glasses and life-changing devices for physically challenged children – giving them the opportunity to participate meaningfully in community life.

Your gift will help bring trained volunteer teachers, school supplies, curriculum and learning materials to preschool children whose lives have been impacted by HIV/AIDS.  And your gift can do so much more.

Just a few weeks ago, we were emerged in Lent, a time when many of us fast or sacrifice by giving up something we love.  And for many of us, we may have been less faithful to that sacrifice.  But here is another chance – think of our many blessings and what it means to share, to give of our talents and of our resources.

Skip Lunch or Beverages: Challenge yourself, your family and friends to skip a lunch, to stand in solidarity with those children struggling with hunger.   Learn more about ERD and donate your lunch money to One Thousand Days of Love.

For those who prefer to give up soft drinks or coffee instead, drink only water for a week.  We often take for granted our access to clean water.  Donate the money you would have spent for coffee, soda, or other drinks to One Thousand Days of Love.

Please may checks payable to St. Mark’s to be forwarded to the Diocese of North Carolina and then on to Episcopal Relief and Development.  Diocesan deadline for campaign is May 23, 2021.  Don’t forget to write 1,000 Days of Love on the Memo Line.

To encourage participation, we’re gonna have ourselves a little competition – a little competition between the seven convocations of the Diocese  Our bishops went into the old vault and came up with $2,500 smackaroos.  That $2,500, to be used for a charitable program or project, will be claimed by the convocation raising the greatest percentage of its goal.
